    @NolchaShows Announce @FaconMagazine as an Official Media Partner, Nolcha Shows Fashion Media Lounge

    nolcha shows, facon magazine, sustainable fashion, ethical fashion, nyfw, new york fashion week

    The Nolcha Shows announce Façon Magazine as an Official Media Partner of the Nolcha Shows Fashion Media Lounge

    The Nolcha Shows are thrilled to welcome global digital magazine, Façon, as an Official Media Partner of the Nolcha Shows Fashion Media Lounge which will take place on September 14th 2016, at the Bryant Park Hotel

    Now in its eighth consecutive year, The Nolcha Shows, held during New York Fashion Week, is one of the city’s leading platforms for global independent fashion designers with sponsors NeoGrid for Fashion, Citibank, JR Ewing Bourbon and Garden of Flavor joining this season.

    Façon Magazine is a global digital magazine and blog that highlights the best in sustainable, ethical, eco-fashion. The magazine was launched in November 2011 by editor-in-chief, Janice Wallace. Wallace, who has a background in design and marketing, left her fruitful job on Capitol Hill to follow her dream of running a fashion magazine. The magazine covers menswear, women’s wear, streetwear, bridal, music, art, and photography. Façon initially focused on providing an editorial pathway for talented emerging designers who were having difficulty acquiring press. However, after viewing the eye-opening documentary, “The True Cost,” which chronicles the negative impact that the fashion industry is having on garment workers and the environment, Wallace decided to change Façon’s focus. It shifted its coverage to include brands who are not only emerging but are using sustainable methods to produce their products as well as employing manufacturers who are practicing ethical production methods.

    Editor-in-chief, Janice Wallace, comments: “I firmly believe that one can be stylish, in vogue, and conscious at the same time. It’s important to show consumers that there are numerous sustainable options that are not only chic and have swag but have zero impact on our environment.  We are excited to be the Official Media Lounge Partner at Nolcha Shows this fall.  It’s one of my favorite fashion events to attend during New York Fashion Week. It’s so well done and the designer selection is superb year after year.”

    The Nolcha Shows Fashion Media Lounge will be attended by media, bloggers and industry, who will preview the latest cutting edge collections from global accessory designers.  This season welcomes back Nolcha Shows designers Michelle Pajak-Reynolds, EL VOYAGE and Taylord Blu.  They will be joined by debuting brands Riley Versa, DELA EVA, Marshelly’s, James Carletons and Oysby.  APRELLEDUANY, Ami Doshi Shah, Sammy Ethiopia and Mafi Mafi, who will be showcased by the The East Africa Trade and Investment Hub

    Kerry Bannigan, Co-Founder, Nolcha Shows, comments; “We are so excited to welcome Façon Magazine as a media partner to support our roster of designers this season. Nolcha is proud of the designers that we curate within the ethical fashion space and it is exciting to align with a publication that shares the vision to support their work.”

    FASHION SPOTLIGHT: 7 Questions for Image & Style Expert George Worrell

    I love a stylish man. I wish more guys would make the effort to care about how they pull themselves together before leaving the house. I always say that whether we like it or not, what you wear tells the world something about you, so make it good! Image and Lifestyle Expert George Worrell does exactly that. But it’s not just about fashion with George. It’s oh so much more.

    1. Tell us about yourself. What are your fashion creds?

      I am the proud owner of George Worrell Style LLC. It’s a boutique consulting firm that specializes in workforce development and comprehensive support services including coaching and mentoring, as well as training and development programming to assist clients in achieving their personal and professional goals. Real style starts with being comfortable in your own skin! Services offered include, but are not limited to:
      * Motivational Speaking
      * Image Consulting
      * Project Management
      * Event Planning and Conference Management

    2. What projects are you currently working on?

      I am currently work on a project called A Fresh Start: The Three Phases of Style. It’s a creative, innovative, and groundbreaking project designed to cultivate a workforce that is attractive to corporations in the District of Columbia through the Art of Fashion.

    3. What’s the biggest lesson that you’ve learned about the fashion industry?

      It’s all smoke and mirrors. Know more about you and your style than the person selling it to you!

    4. Describe your personal style.

      In my personal style, I can be quite business-like, or at least, (hopefully) quite professional  and “mature.” There are certainly degrees of variety ranging from casual to semi-formal to formal. Even if it sounds weird, I try to find a balance between the very clean-cut, no nonsense and even slightly old school. On the other hand, I also like rocking a slightly bohemian look (although bohemian in more dandified rather than non-consumerist, shockingly provocative manner) to a slightly extravagant look (again, leaning far more towards extravagance in luxuries, rather than in peculiarities).

    5. Who are your style icons?

      My style icons are all members of my family. My uncle Clarence was a tailor and legendary business owner in D.C. My uncle James Lee made shoes by hand! My aunt Betty was the perfect hostess with quite a great sense of style. My aunt Irene is the first person who shared my love of fashion. She was incredibly chic. Their input in my life made them my icons.

    6. What’s always in your frig?

      Baking soda! I’m not fond of food odors.

    7. What are three things that you can’t live without?

      Gourmet Coffee. Gucci Loafers. Long walks down Madison Avenue.

    Fashionistas Flock To The Gilt City DC Warehouse Sale

    gilt city dc, warehouse sale, gilt city dc sale, sample sale

    Gilt City DC Warehouse Sale Rocks!

    It happens twice a year. This June, The Gilt City Warehouse Sale opened it’s doors to the district; ushering in the triumphant return of high fashion at discount prices. Shopping a warehouse sale is a physically demanding sport that requires advance training. I started doing sprints and push-ups to work on my agility. I watched a karate video on YouTube so I knew what to do in the event that frenzied fashionistas started throwing elbows at me. I was prepared. To say that this biannual sale is a highly anticipated event would be putting it mildly. You can find designers like Oscar De La Renta, Bagdley Mischka, Helmut Lang, and Caroline Herrera (welcome to the neighborhood!) for up to 80 percent off. Once they got in, shoppers entering the sale were immediately transfixed by the racks upon racks of designer clothes, shoes, and accessories laid out before them as far as the eye can see.

    There but to observe and draw meaning from the chaos of a Gilt City DC Warehouse Sale, I sipped my delicious complimentary La Marca Prosecco.  I walked up and down the aisles to take in the atmosphere including the electric sounds, courtesy of DJ KC Higgins. With the energizing beats lighting up the venue and fresh cocktails flowing, you really felt like this was your moment. You were a prize fighter sauntering down the aisle to your soundtrack, like there was a ring waiting for you at the end of every row. Or a dress. Or the bag of your dreams. Many women did not want to risk losing their momentum by stopping, and did some kind of “walking try-on” ritual. They were pulling tops over their head or stepping into skirts and dresses while continuing to walk, preferring to layer two outfits over their own clothing than go to a fitting room for 3 minutes and miss a beat.

    Gilt City DC didn’t forget about the guys. There were gents were in attendance, and it wasn’t to sit up front and hold someone’s purse. Gilt City DC had fashions from names like Tom Ford, John Varvatos, and GANT for equally incredible prices to keep stylish Washingtonian men happy. For them, it wasn’t nearly as hectic. They were so lucky. They could actually browse through the aisles without a care. Isn’t this always the case?

    It was a fantastic night. Finding a deal is my joy, but the night itself was really just so much FUN! The music and refreshments were great, the atmosphere was energetic, and there was a shared sense of camaraderie and laughter among the ladies. But the real highlight for me were the dramatic surprise reactions from people who unearthed a treasure while digging through a bin. Sheer delight. I look forward to watching them next year. I better start training now.

    Want to snag an invite for next time? For more information about Gilt City DC and this amazing biannual warehouse sale, visit Gilt City DC. Follow Gilt City DC on Twitter at @GiltCityDC for access to the best deals and offers in Washington, D.C.

    ART in DC: A DC Party Beneath The Streets of Tokyo

    2015 Phillips Collection Contemporaries Bash

    The Phillips Collection hosted it’s annual gala where DC art lovers, philanthropists, and supporters gather to celebrate the acclaimed works and cultural influence of the museum’s art collection. The highly anticipated event now has it’s own popular tradition: The After Party. Known as the Contemporaries Bash, this year’s Gala after party transported guests with it’s theme, leading them straight into the heart of Tokyo’s Nightlife. Car doors opened as the Taiko drums sounded, and a steady stream of beautiful ball gowns and tuxedos descended on Dock 5 at Union Market. Stiff manners were happily checked at the door as the well-dressed guests made their way into the world of Tokyo’s vibrant underground.

    The After Party is hosted each year by The Phillips Collection Contemporaries, a council of young professionals with a shared appreciation for the historic art displayed at the museum and are passionate about introducing it’s rich cultural significance to their own generation.

    The event was inspired by the Tokyo’s Harajuku and Shimokitazawa neighborhoods, which are credited with giving rise to Japanese Pop Art Movement. They remain the city’s epicenter for the latest emerging fashions, ideas, and sensational nightlife. Guests sipped Japanese-inspired cocktails while DJ Ben Chang took revelers on a hypnotic sound journey through the streets of Tokyo. The event featured a sushi conveyor belt, a really creative fashion lounge, and a private arcade area where suave gentlemen in tuxedos pulled their bow ties loose and frantically competed at classics like Super Smash Brothers, Street Fighter, Mario Kart, and Minecraft. I personally couldn’t play because my hands were reserved by a cocktail and my sno-cone from the truck outside. As a kid I’d immediately quit video games to run outside for a sno-cone if I heard the ice cream man. My nature remains unchanged. Priorities.

    The evening was spectacular overall. The chic crowd was buzzing about excitedly against the backdrop of this incredible, well executed atmosphere. But mostly, it was also for a great cause. In addition to the gala, the Contemporaries Bash raised many thousands of dollars that will directly fund The Phillips Collection’s renowned education programs. They are developing a teaching framework that gives the tools to develop art-integrated lessons and curricula to teachers of all subjects. It will strengthen K-12 education for all of our future leaders.

    Pet Lovers Rock The Fashion For Paws Runway For The Washington Humane Society

    Whoever said, “diamonds are a girl’s best friend,” didn’t have a dog.

    On Saturday, May 2nd the 9th Annual Fashion For Paws Runway Show returned to raise funds for the Washington Humane Society. The Washington Human Society and it’s mission to provide kind care for the pets in our community while finding them loving, secure homes.

    Fashion for Paws, MC’ed by local celebrity veterinarian Dr. Katy T. Nelson and WJLA’s Scott Thuman, kicked off at The Grand Hyatt in downtown DC with a VIP reception for sponsors, donors, and runway participants. Guests were abuzz with anticipation to see the darling dogs of Washington strut their stuff down the runway with their humans.

    The venue was stunning. The bright pink runway was created to look like the ultimate fashionista’s closet. Naturally, the special backdrop included doggie decor for girl’s best friend. Notable models walking with their furry companions to show their support included WUSA’s Nikki Burdine, Mark Del Rosso, EVP/COO of Audi International, Teresa Del Rosso, Owner, DC Elite Image, and George Pagonis, Executive Chef of Kapnos DC. Another integral person to the night’s success was the exceptional DJ Seyhan. Seyhan spun an impressive track list that stoked the energy of the crowd during the show, and kept the majority of guests on the dance floor until the end. I will definitely be contacting him for my next event. I highly recommend his ability to create a memorable night for Façon Magazine readers if you have an occasion for the DC’s glitterati.

    There was an equally fabulous after-party following the runway show. The entire night was memorable and energetic with a room filled with a well dressed crowd happily socializing and dancing. It was definitely one of the most vibrant events I’ve been to this season. It’s definitely on my must-attend events for next year. By the end of the night, Fashion for Paws raised over $400,000 for The Washington Humane Society.

    Interested in participating and walking the catwalk with your canine or learn more about Fashion For Paws continuous work for the Washington Humane Society? Get involved! Visit Fashion for Paws for details and to learn more about this wonderful annual event.

    About Ankara

    Ankara also known as “African Prints”,”African Wax Prints”, “Wax Prints”, “Holland Wax” and “Dutch Wax” ,is a 100% cotton fabric with vibrant patterns. It is usually a colorful cloth and is primarily associated with Africa because of the tribal-like patterns and motifs. The cotton fabric is versatile and utilized in various industries, such as: Clothing, Accessories, Footwear, and Furniture.

    Ankara is made through an Indonesian wax-resist dyeing technique called Batik. In this technique, methods are used to “resist” the dye from reaching the entire cloth, thereby creating a pattern. Even though Ankara is associated with the African culture,  its origins are not authentically and wholly African. Dutch wax prints started out as an inexpensive mass-produced imitation of Indonesian batik fabric. It was originally intended for the Indonesian market but found a more enthusiastic market in West Africa, where it became symbols of traditional and high quality fashion.

    From West Africa, this unique luxurious fabric spread to other parts of Africa and all over the world. Ankara has recently gained popularity in the global fashion scene from the likes of Beyoncé to the Vice President’s wife Jill Biden wearing it in their outfits.

    All Things Ankara Fashion Week DC 2014 will celebrate a popular fabric worn by many Africans, especially West Africans and increasingly others all over the world. We invite everyone to come out to the events during All Things Ankara Fashion Week DC 2014, including Ankara and African Fashion enthusiasts. Ankara Attire is highly encouraged for all events.
