Fill Your Beauty Bag With These Products For Your Winter Ski Trip

There is no time like now to take a winter ski trip with friends or a significant other to refresh and renew after the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Summer is still a ways off so traveling to beautiful snow-capped mountains is a perfect way to unwind and have some fun.

While preparing for your trip, there are many things you will need to pack but you must not forget your beauty essentials. These aren’t just the essentials to be cute like your favorite lipstick and tinted moisturizer. We are talking about beauty essentials that will protect you from the the harsh cold climate elements. There’s the varying altitude, harsh wind and perhaps snow and rain. To protect your skin, extremities, and even hair from damage, continue reading for everything you need to put in your beauty bag.

    Screen That Sun

It is unthinkable that one could get sunburned in the winter but it happens. Those beautiful sun rays reflect off of that perfect white snow, thus exposing you to harmful UVA/UVB rays. So, when preparing to glide down those slopes, put on your sunscreen and don’t forget to pay close attention to your nose and lips. Remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours. You don’t want to ruin your winter ski trip with icky sunburn.

Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Physical Defense SPF30.  This cruelty-free sunscreen is formulated without many of the ingredients that often cause irritation. Lightweight and packed with antioxidants, it works on all skin tones, skin types and helps to minimize fine lines and wrinkles.

Coola Liplux SPF 15 -Vanilla Peppermint.  Created with natural food grade ingredients, Coola Liplux will keep your lips smooth, hydrated and protected and is also water resistant.

Supergoop Forever Young Hand Cream Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 40 PA+++.  Keep your hands looking young, smooth and protected with Supergoop Forever Young Hand Cream.  Antioxidants will protect from free radical damage and sea buckthorn fruit, rich in omega 7 fatty acids, reduces inflammation and helps with hyperpigmentation.  It is also cruelty free and non commedogenic (won’t clog pores).

    Moisturize Moisturize Moisturize

The only frost you should experience should be in your morning cereal or on the slopes. Cold weather saps your skin of moisture because of the lack of humidity. Add the wind factor that comes from skillfully trekking down the ski slope. Trust me, your skin can definitely suffer. Protect your skin from becoming dry and windburned with the following face moisturizers.

    Normal To Dry Skin

Clarins Hydra Quench Cream.  Perfect for normal to dry skin, Clarins Hydra Quench will replenish moisture to dry, parched skin.

    Oily Skin

Korres Pomegranate Balancing Cream Gel Moisturizer.  Oily skin needs hydration too so stay balanced and flake free with this moisturizer.  Not only does this moisturizer hydrate, it is pore reducing and  mattifying.

    Don’t Forget Your Hair

Before you put on that ski hat, be sure to take preventive measures to ensure your hair stays soft, manageable and protected while you enjoy your time on the slopes. Consider the following:

Josie Maran Argan Oil.  Packed with Vitamin E and argan oil, this oil is perfect for adding moisture and shine to the hair and scalp.

Alterna Hair Care Caviar CC Cream For Hair.  This 10 in one cc cream does it all – protect from breakage, hydrate, provide UV protection, add shine and so much more.  Formulated with caviar extract and antioxidant Vitamin C, this wonder product also provides light hold.

Qhemet Biologics Cocoal Tree Detangling Ghee.  This creamy detangling product is 100% vegetarian. It is perfect for bringing comfort to dry, tangled tresses. Formulated with rich ingredients such as cocoa butter, Qhemet Biologics helps to reduce breakage, especially for those with coily/curly hair.

Post Ski Activities – Relax and Wind Down

After a fun day on the slopes, wind down with a mug of hot cocoa or your favorite herbal tea. Indulge in a relaxing aromatherapy bath and follow up with a rich, nourishing body cream.

As always, we want to hear from you.  What are some some of winter ski trip beauty essentials?

7 Things That Smart People Do To Stay Healthy This Winter

Smart People Follow These Tips For Staying Healthy

It all starts with that tickle in your throat…

You know how the story goes. You are living life, just working, traveling, and socializing. Next thing you know, you get that feeling in your throat. Then comes the runny nose, coughing and sneezing. Then you are down for the count. In the bed with a stuffy nose, medicine and tissue by your bedside.

Anyone can get sick any time of the year. But wintertime is where we usually see an increase in this all too common scenario of cold and flu.  So what is one to do? Sure we can be reactive and nurse ourselves back to health. But how many of you have ever heard the saying “an ounce of prevention is better than the cure”? By taking a few simple steps, we can decrease our downtime or possibly avoid cold and flu all together.  Continue reading to find out ways to stay healthy this winter.

    1. Wash your hands and dry off with disposable towels.

Think about how many things you touch throughout the day before you have a “need” to wash your hands. The flu virus can live on surfaces such as clothing, keyboards, and doorknobs for several hours. So it is important to wash your hands often using antibacterial soap. Keep hand sanitizer nearby when you can’t get to a sink.

    2. Stay Away.

From sick people that is. The droplets from coughing and sneezing can travel a considerable distance. These droplets can wreak havoc on the healthy, thus weakening the immune system and making you more susceptible to getting sick.

    3. Drink Water.

We all know that water has a multitude of benefits such as keeping skin clear and keeping one regular.  However, dehydration weakens the immune system.  So go ahead and pour yourself a glass of water. It will boost your immunity and flush out your system by ridding your body of all that can make you sick.

    4. Eat Healthy.

Don’t depend solely on supplements that promise to boost your health. Make sure your diet is balanced. This means including colorful fruits and vegetables which are high in antioxidants. Also, include foods that are high in essential fatty acid, such as fish, to help ward off the common cold and flu.

    5. Put A Lid On It.

Mom knew what she was talking about when she told you to wear a hat on your head. Most of our body heat escapes from the head. Don’t get tricked into complacency with a mild day sandwiched in between an otherwise brutally cold week. Keep your eye on the weather report to inform you when you should layer up and when you can take some of those layers off.

    6. Get Some Fresh Air.

Even during the winter months, occasionally open the windows (or at least crack them). Doing so gives fresh air the chance to flow in and decrease the chance of airborne viruses making you their host.

    7. Stop Stressing And Get Your Rest.

Your body restores itself when you get a good night’s rest. So be sure to get those 7-8 hours. This period of sleep can help your body fight off infection.

These are just a few of the many ways to stay healthy this winter. But what if after all of these precautions you still fall ill?  It happens to the best of us. Keep your chicken soup on hand, drink green tea, and explore the benefits of using raw garlic and echinacea in your daily routine.  If your symptoms last more that two days and are unresponsive to your over-the-counter medicines, see a doctor.

As always, we want to hear from you!  What are some things that you do to prevent cold and flu during the winter?

The Best Hair and Skin Care Tips When the Weather Turns Cold

When the winter months finally arrive, we often shift our focus from fun in the sun to indoor heating bills, winterizing our cars and stocking up on winter apparel. While those things are very important, we often forget to consider something else that can be adversely affected by harsh winter weather conditions and that is our skin.  Our skin comes in constant contact with harsh wind, snow and rain causing severe windburn. And that’s just outside. This time of year we like to turn up the heat on in our homes, offices, and cars. This type of artificial heat can suck the life out our skin causing it to become dull, dry, flaky, and confused.

What about our hair? To protect ourselves from harsh winter weather, we turn to wearing hats, scarves and hoods to stay warm. However the materials in these items, often made of cotton, wool and the like, can dry our hair out even more, causing our hair to become dry, brittle and dull which often leads to breakage.

So what is one to do?  You may have your hair and skin routine down to a science for the warmer months but with the change in weather comes a physical change in our hair and skin. The products that may have worked in warmer weather may need to be adjusted for colder months. Where you may have been using lightweight oils, gels and creams, now is the time to switch to something more emollient.

There are many things you can do to help keep your skin and hair healthy and manageable during the cooler months.

Increase Your Water Intake.  It goes without saying that water has a myriad of health benefits such as keeping your body hydrated and your digestion regular but it also keeps your skin (and hair) hydrated, clear and soft.

Exfoliate.  Use a gentle exfoliator once a week on your face (don’t forget your neck and decolletage), body and scalp.  Doing so will relieve itchiness, remove dead skin, and improve circulation.

Take Supplements.  Healthy skin and hair comes from with so be sure your diet includes foods/supplements with essential fatty acids.

Lower The Temperature.  It is tempting to take a hot shower to thaw out and relax our minds after a long day or to put the heat on the highest setting to keep warm but keep in mind these things will deplete moisture from the skin.

Use A Humidifier.  A humidifier will add humidity to the air in your home or office.

Add An Oil/Serum.  If you have not become familiar with the benefits of using face/hair oils and serums, now is a good time.  These types of products usually contain additional benefits to help with hydration and conditioner (as well as repair, strength, brightening, etc).  These are also good to add to your favorite moisturizer (or foundation) that you prefer to keep using throughout the year.

Mask It.  Even when you are doing all you should be doing to maintain healthy skin and hair, sometime your hair and skin need a boost.  Consider using a hydrating mask for skin and hair that you can leave on for 20 minutes to an hour or even sleep in.

Whether you choose do some or all of the hair and skin care tips listed above, remember to be consistent because that is where you will achieve sustainable results.

We want to hear from you!  Let us know what tips resonate with you or what you do to maintain healthy skin and hair during the cold winter months.

2017 Presidential Inauguration: Stay Camera Ready With These Beauty Tips

2017 Presidential Inauguration, Gala Season, Inaugural Parties

Getting Prepped for the 2017 Presidential Inauguration

The 2017 Presidential Inauguration is right around the corner. Regardless of what side of the fence you are on, inauguration season in the nation’s capital is still the perfect time to get glamorous and head out to party. Whether you are celebrating or coping, an evening gala calls for the following tips to slay and remain camera-ready.

    Prep Your Skin

It goes without saying that before you apply any makeup, you need to prep your skin to keep your makeup looking flawless all night long. Start off with cleaning and moisturizing your skin with products formulated for your skin type. Follow up with a primer such as Smashbox Iconic Photo Finish Foundation Primer that will smooth texture in the skin and, minimize pores and fine lines. If your skin is more on the oily side, try Becca Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfector which is like blotting papers for the skin. Follow up with foundation and blush. Set your makeup with Laura Mercier Candleglow Sheer Perfecting Powder which is a multipurpose powder which sets and perfects with a diffused luminous glow.

    Eyes On The Prize

Before applying concealer,  prep with an eye cream. Boscia Enlivening Amino-AG Eye Treatment targets the delicate eye area to help with hydration, puffiness and dark circles. Apply Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion to prep the lid for eyeshadow/liner application. Fill in your brows with a pencil or powder. If you are attending a daytime event, consider a soft eye look which includes liner and lashes. For an evening gala, consider a sultry smoky eye. Urban Decay Naked Smoky is perfect for achieving both looks. Add liner, lashes and mascara to complete the look.

    Lip Service

To ensure your lip color lasts throughout your event, start with smooth, hydrated lips. Exfoliate with a lip scrub and follow up with a balm. For lip color that will stand up against eating and drinking, apply Huda Beauty Liquid Matte Lipstick. Apply a little gloss if you prefer your lips to be less matte.

To complete your look, apply Tata Harper Hydrating Floral Essence which is great for use on top of make up and for boosting skin’s natural hydration.

Tell us what you are doing for the 2017 Presidential Inauguration Season. Since we know when is the next presidential election, do something fun now! We would love to hear from you.

    The New Skincare Routine Basics

The Difference Between Toners, Essence, Serums, and Boosters

    Your New Skincare Basics

How many times have you thought you had your skincare routine on lock only to hear about some new product or trend to pique your interest? Once (or twice) a year, there is an explosion of new products, trends, and techniques that come across our radars which ultimately have us asking ourselves if we need to re-evaluate our routines and maybe our lives.  Then the research begins.

The latest skincare obsession I have been hearing a lot about is the skincare essence—a staple in Korean skincare routines. It has gained a lot of popularity here in the US. What is an essence?  Is it a fad or clever marketing? How is that different from a toner or a cleansing water? During my research, I found that there are subtle differences and maybe even some overlap in products.  Here’s a breakdown of the different categories of products, their purpose and their position in your skincare routine.

There has been a long-standing debate over the necessity of toners. From dermatologists, to estheticians to lay-people, everybody has a differing opinion. So what is a toner anyway and how is it different from an astringent?  To begin with, toners and astringents are both water-based. But the key ingredients in toners and astringents are what give them their subtle points of difference. The key ingredients in toners are witch hazel and some form of a humectant such as glycerin. These are great for normal to oily skin. Astringents, on the other hand, usually have a higher alcohol content as well as salicylic acid. These work better for oily and acne-prone skin. Toners and astringents are thought to have an additional cleansing effect such as removing any additional residue that washing your face doesn’t remove. Also it is thought that cleansing the skin can sometimes strip the skin and raise the PH level. This causes the skin to become unbalanced. Toner will neutralize the skin.  Korres Pomegranate Toner $22

Although not new, this Korean staple (and other Asian countries) is gaining in popularity in the US. So what is an essence and how is it different from a toner or serum? Used after the toner/astringent step, think of an essence as the first step in the treatment phase of your skincare routine. An essence delivers extra hydration to the skin and preps it for other skin care products. It makes other skin care products more effective. So if you really need that acne gel to work faster and more effectively, consider using an essence. It’s perfect for all skin types.  May Coop Raw Sauce $43

A serum has similar functionality to an essence. It’s can also be a part of the treatment phase of a skincare routine. A serum is that they are usually targeted for specific skin concerns such as brightening, repair, hydration or hyper-pigmentation. Since the molecular structure of a serum is very small.  Serums have the ability to penetrate deeper into the dermis to do more reparative work, you can use an essence followed by a serum.   Tatcha Luminous Deep Hydration Firming Serum $95

    Cleansing Water

Cleansing water has nothing to do with a body detox. This is actually a low/no foam cleanser for the face. Why not just splash water on your face and go on about your day? Well, there is more to it than meets the eye. Cleansing water contains micelles which are tiny oil molecules suspended in water which absorb dirt and debris. Cleansing waters are good to use by themselves if you wear minimal to no makeup. Otherwise, use it to remove your makeup. Follow up with your regular cleanser or use a cleansing water like you would use a toner. That’s my favorite way to use this particular product.  Koh Gen Do Cleansing Spa Water $39

Think of a booster as a turbo-charged serum. It can help you customize your skincare routine. Boosters, unlike serums, are meant to be used for a certain period of time. Perhaps you have a favorite moisturizer that you use but notice that maybe in the winter you need more hydration, brightening or radiance. That is what you would use a booster for.  Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Clinical Concentrate Boosters $58

Before you launch a search for one of these new products, keep the following in mind:

    1. Know your skin and how it reacts to certain stimuli like hormone fluctuations, weather changes, diet, lifestyle, etc.
    2. Understand the ingredients of the products you are considering. Ask yourself what your skin needs and what can your skin tolerate.
    3. Don’t forget that sunscreen, especially if it is not in your moisturizer. Apply sunscreen as the last step of your skincare, before any makeup application.

The Latest In Fall Beauty Trends

The Best Fall Beauty Trends for 2015

Autumn.  I love this time of year. It’s around this time that we realize that the year is almost over and we re-evaluate our progress through the year. It is also the time of year that we assess our wardrobes and our beauty routines. We look to our favorite magazines to find out what’s hot this season. Many of the following beauty trends are not new. But there is always a different way to spin many of our beloved looks, especially the looks that walked this season’s runway shows. To find out which beauty trends are hot on the runway this season, keep reading.

    The Red Lip

This classic beauty staple shows up on many runway shows season after season. Of course, we like to experiment with other colors like the nude lip. We also love those daring colors such as purple and hot pink. But there is something special about the classic look of red lips. Now it’s all about various shades of red—bright, dark, and sultry. There are also the various formulations of creamy or matte. The key difference this season is the full-bodied finish as opposed to tints and glosses.

The current trend in lashes is not quite what you would think. It’s really about that wide-eyed doll lash look that’s created with a lot of mascara and yes, lashes clumped together. I must say this look may not be for everyone (myself included) but makeup is about self-expression. So if you are digging that look, go for it! If you want lashes that are equally impactful but less clumpy, go for a faux lash. It’s a bit more voluminous and sexy.

Metallics are one of my favorite beauty trends. From lipsticks, to nail polishes and eye shadows, metallics can add a luxurious vibe to your look. The key is balance. If you want to use metallics, I would suggest choosing one feature to highlight. As opposed to highlighting all features and look like the Tin Man. If you are wearing this trend on your eyes, try a metallic liner. If you choose to do your lid, opt for a matte shadow in the same tone or shade family in the crease to ground the look. If you choose to focus on the lips, use a liner in a complementary shade to give shape and definition to the lips.

    Hair Accessories

Using hair accessories is a great way to elevate your hairstyle. From barrettes and headbands to scarves and bows, the options are endless. You can also experiment with different textures and finishes such as leather for a chic rocker vibe or crystals which can create a glamorous finish to your look.

    Graphic Eyes

Go beyond your usual cat eye and experiment with an extra flick of liner to create a double-winged liner. Take it a step further by layering another color on top of your black liner to create and exciting pop on the eyelid. If you are feeling extremely daring, experiment with different shapes or even draw a graphic line in your crease like they did for the runway shows at Suno and Rochas.

    Flushed Cheeks

Flushed cheeks are a great way to finish off a minimalist makeup look. This season’s looks are unstructured and easy going in hues of rosy and brownish pinks. Cream blushes applied with your fingertips are perfect for getting this fresh, easygoing glow.

    Feathery Brows

Brows are more feathery and relaxed this season. There’s a focus on grooming and light control which can be achieved with a brow brush and brow gel.

    Nail Art

Nail Art is one of those beauty trends that I don’t see going away. The look on the runways varied from lines to color blocking and even geometric shapes to adorn the nail.

    Deep Rich Polish

I absolutely love the deep rich hues of fall including copper, deep gray, blue, plum, and burgundy. These shades give way to a beautiful, sophisticated and daring vibe.

What’s your favorite beauty trends this season?

The 8 Beauty Essentials You Need in Your Gym Bag

gym, gym essentials, gym rat, beauty routines

As a woman on the go, your life is busy. Your gym routine needs to keep up.  Never wanting anything, including style, to get in the way of a good hardcore workout, you still need an efficient post workout beauty routine with products that are minimalist, multitasking and can get you to your next destination quickly. Here are your must-haves which are just as essential to include in your gym bag as your workout gear.

    Here’s What You Need

    1. Dry Shampoo.  Skip washing your hair in the gym shower, especially if you are short on time. Instead pack your bag with a dry shampoo like Dry Bar Triple Sec which will refresh, texturize and volumize all in one step.
    2. Small Hair Dryer.  Wouldn’t it be great if the gym had hair dryers?  Well, until that happens, bring your own like the T3 Featherweight Compact Folding Hair Dryer. This dryer has all the power and capabilities of a larger hair dryer without all of the bulk.
    3. Small Flat Iron.  When quick hair touch ups are in order, do it with flat iron that is small and mighty like the amika Mighty Mini Titanium Styler. This styler will leave your hair smooth and shiny and stores unobtrusively in your gym bag.
    4. Hair Wrap.  We all know what an intense sweat session can do to your hair. Longer hair can be easier to maintain pre- and post-workout simply because you can easily whipped it up into a ponytail or updo. But what if you are rocking a short crop style? Whatever the case, keep those edges and fly-aways in place with a hair wrap. Do it in style with a hair wrap made of soft material that will help to absorb access sweat and protect your hair at the same time with the Silky Wraps Diva Exercise Hair Wrap.
    5. Deodorant.  In case you forgot, here is your friendly reminder. Dove Advance Care Original Clean Antiperspirant Deodorant not only provides deodorant and antiperspirant protection but also contains Nutrium Moisture which helps skin replenish itself from post-shave irritation.
    6. Body Wash.  When wipes won’t do the trick after a killer cardio kickboxing class, use a body wash like Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Body Wash. This body wash will cleanse and hydrate at the same time so that you won’t have to carry extra products in your gym bag.
    7. Skincare.  It is imperative to wash your face after a workout. But who wants to lug around a bunch of bottles, tubes and jars of skincare and makeup products? No one. Save space by using  TCS 3-1-1 Quuart Travel Pack to dispense your face wash, moisturizer or other beauty products into.
    8. Tinted MoisturizerNars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 is perfect for providing lightweight moisture and coverage. No one wants to slather on tons of heavy makeup after working out.

What are your gym essentials? What’s always in your gym bag?

    Eye Paint

One stroke across the eyelid with Armani Tint Fluid Eye Color will lock in hours of beautiful wearability. This liquid “shadow” has a unique cooling sensation and a high pigment load that transforms from a liquid to a solid. This turns it into a “shadow” that can be worn alone or used as a base for another eyeshadow. Available in 12 shades inspired by the runway. $38

Pro Tip:  Wipe off the excess product to control the application. Gently dab the applicator on the eye and blend down with your fingertip.  Repeat until the desired level of coverage is achieved.

    Line and Define

With bold pops of color, you can line and define your eyes with no brush needed!  Smashbox Photo Angle Pure Pigment Gel Liner combines 36 hours of waterproof, smudge-proof high impact color in a pen with an angled tip applicator. The gel formula is perfect because it doesn’t flake or peel off. It’s also flexible because you can draw any line from thin to thick. Available in 6 shades. $24.

Pro Tip:  When applying the liner, start from the outside of the eye and work your way toward the inner corner of the eye.

    Magic Hour

The natural light before sunrise or just after sunset casts a golden glow on your face. That look is now available to you at anytime.  Smashbox L.A.
